Bavaria’s animal celebration
In September and October, the three resorts of the Karwendel alpine range host “Farmer’s Weeks". At the beginning of autumn, hundreds of goats, sheep and cows come down from the summer pastures of the upper Isar Valley, part company, and head home to their owners’ barns for the winter. Ancient customs, precious Upper Bavarian costumes, Christian festivals and regional products say a great deal about the Bavarian way of life. "Who has the most beautiful goat?" they say in the centre of Mittenwald, after the “Driving of the goats". The ‘Best Sheep’ is honoured a week later, after the bleating flocks and their shepherds have come down through the Geigenbauort at the foot of the Karwendel mountains.
The highlight of the Farmer’s Weeks is the big cattle drive in Krün at the end of September. The autumn is celebrated with a big carnival marquee and farmer's market and attracts thousands of visitors. Homemade jams and pillows made of hay and plenty of domestic products can be bought at the farmers' market in Krün. And that the way to your heart is through your stomach is proved by Isar Valley innkeepers during the “Titbit Weeks" with the mainly local products they cook up.
Harvest Festival is a tradition:
the harvest in particular is celebrated, following an old custom. The Christian Harvest Festival is celebrated with a festive procession through the village. Locals and guests haul the elaborately decorated Harvest Crown through the village. Finally, all gather at the Church of St. Sebastian to receive the final blessing.
Colourful nature
In October and November, autumn is marked by constant weather inversions with fog-free mountain air and long hours of sunshine.
